Seeking Surf and Sun

It's time to think about hot summer days, the cool breeze coming off the water, sandy beaches, and lazy hours spent listening to the surf crash or lap against the shore. If you have diabetes, it's also time to think about summer skin care and precautions for your feet so that your time in the sun doesn't result in a visit to your doctor.

People with diabetes can, and do, enjoy beach vacations just like the millions of other folks who don't have diabetes, vying for a space to lay their towel or build a sand castle. Diabetics just need to be sensible and prudent in their pre-planning and activity while at the beach.

A General Checklist:

  1. Take along twice the necessary amount of insulin and medication that you would normally use during your stay, and split it up among your personal carry-along belongings in case of theft or misplacement. This plus snacks to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) should be near to you at all times and familiar to those in your beach party. Make sure to store your insulin and medications at proper temperatures -- you can buy devices expressly made for this at your pharmacy or take along an insulated bag or small cooler.
  2. Carry some form of medical alert information (a necklace, bracelet, wallet card) stating your condition and any known drug allergies.
Some Special Precautions:

  1. Since people with diabetes may be more prone to fungal and bacterial infections, they need to take special care of their skin. During hot weather, they should shower at least once daily, especially after swimming. Skin kept in damp, sweaty clothes is susceptible to active organisms, the most common of which are yeast and fungi that cause athlete's food. Skin infections are also commonly contracted on pool and communal shower floors and from excessive sweat and rubbing of the skin. Change to dry clothing or swimsuit. A light dusting of talcum powder (not cornstarch) can help absorb any excess moisture and sweat.
  2. Feet need special attention at the beach, avoiding walking barefoot, breaking in new shoes gradually, and wearing canvas or leather shoes as open as possible. We have two special pairs of canvas slip-on shoes that we wear to the beach and into the water, changing into the dry spare when needed. A small cut caused by stepping on a broken shell could cause serious problems that can be avoided.
  3. Everyone, including those with diabetes, need to protect their skin from the damaging effect of the summer sun, particularly when near the water. Remember that you can get as serious of a sunburn on a hazy day as you can when the sun's in its full glory. Prudent use of sunblock (SPF 15 or more), broad-brimmed hats, and sunglasses that screen out both ultraviolet (UV) A and B rays will help.
  4. Minor sunburn can be soothed with cool baths or cool water or milk compresses, oral pain relievers, and topical cortisone creams. Topical numbing (anesthetic), oily, or greasy creams should be avoided. Expect minor sunburn discomfort to peak in 1 to 2 days after exposure.
  5. Should you get more sun than you wanted and major sunburn develops, with or without blisters, consult your physician at once.
