Attending Holiday Affairs
With a New Attitude

Most of your life as a person who has diabetes, you are concerned with food: what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, and then how the food will affect your blood glucose levels. Today, we're going to ask that you focus on something else during the holiday season. That is, concentrating on the true meaning of the season, socializing with friends, and meeting new people.

Christmas and New Years are times of cocktail and office parties at hours you would not ordinarily eat. So? Eat when you are supposed to, and go to the party, not having to worry about food, time of eating, or medications. Position yourself away from the buffet table and talk with other guests who are not eating. If you must have something in your hand, carry a glass of club soda with a squeeze of lemon. To further avoid temptation, ask your hostess or host to give a guided tour of the house; admire the decorations.

In the years since we started changing the emphasis from food to friends, we have never noted a hostess or caterer who had their feelings hurt because we didn't partake of a cheese ball or sweet and sour meatballs. Rather, our hostesses have been more interested in having a party where people have fun, good conversations, and leave with pleasant memories of the evening. Try this attitude just once and see if you don't have more energy to just plain enjoy the others around you.
